Gearbox Oil

Hi folks,

I've dropped the oil from my 2nd gen's gearbox so that I can pull the drive shafts. Anyway, I checked the service manual to see if any of the oil I had was the right viscosity:

That's a lot thinner than any gearbox oil I have!!

This is engine oil viscosity right? So do I just whack in engine oil?

Also, I read that chart as saying I should use 20w-40 oil for the temperatures we get here, am I correct?

A quick look online suggests 20w-40 isn't easily available, so I take it 10w-40 is my best bet?

10W40 full synthetic - such as Redline or Gulf - will work beautifully. Don't use cheap stuff, as you don't need much, and it will transform the shift, and reduce noise and wear. Easy!

dont use engine oil in the gearbox. the clue is in the name

the difference (viscocity) between what came out of mine and what went in was huge. amsoil imho.

Those viscosities sound like it's talking about engine oil, but 30k service interval?

must be talking gearbox.
It's unusual, but not unheard of for a gearbox to use engine oil.
Looks like 10w-40 or 10w-30 then yep.
What did the stuff that came out smell like? Gearbox oil normally smells much more 'heavy' than engine oil.

Honda has recommended using engine oil in its manual transmissions in its cars and bikes for over 40 years...

I've only ever used Honda MTF. I've no idea what Viscosity it is though.

Well there you go... I've never looked into gearbox oils on ludes before, so had no idea.

You can use 10w40 yes. However it's the baseline spec for what's needed.

I'd be more inclined to use something designed specifically for gearboxes, so options are:

1 - 10w40 engine oil - From Anywhere - the base stuff
2 - Honda MTF - From Honda Dealers - ideal for a gearbox with low miles in perfect condition
3 - Torco MTF - From these guys: http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/nimbus-motorsport-f80/ - ideal for higher mileage gearboxes with no issues
4 - Amsoil MTF - From these guys: http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/opie-oils/ - ideal for gearboxes with high miles and shift issues
