You can use 10w40 yes. However it's the baseline spec for what's needed.
I'd be more inclined to use something designed specifically for gearboxes, so options are:
1 - 10w40 engine oil - From Anywhere - the base stuff
2 - Honda MTF - From Honda Dealers - ideal for a gearbox with low miles in perfect condition
3 - Torco MTF - From these guys:
http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/nimbus-motorsport-f80/ - ideal for higher mileage gearboxes with no issues
4 - Amsoil MTF - From these guys:
http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/opie-oils/ - ideal for gearboxes with high miles and shift issues
