Does my car have a dodgy mot??

I've owned a skoda octavia since 1st sept and I've found the usual things not right that are typical for a eBay car but nothing major and then I started to notice a faint glow from behind the abs light.

It was only noticeable at night, and then it happened. Late one raining night on the way to robs place I missed a red light and brakes hard skidding straight across the junction.... I guess they don't work then!

So today I decided to have alook and found this



That's 2 rolled up bits of double sided tape, thinking the worst I went to a vw shop and got it plugged in. It's the osf abs sensor, £12.50 from local motor factors so why did they bother?

The car was mot'd about 10days before I bought it so I assume this was don't to get it passed but should have failed on not illuminating when first started.

So do I, report the mot place, leave negative feed bad?

The car was dirt cheap and it's better than some of the eBay cars I've bought. But I've never had a dodgy mot!

What's your thoughts??

your correct chap. They should of noticed that the light didn't light up then go out at start up. So that's dodgy to start with. IMO you have sorted it, quite cheaply infact, is it really worth the bother of reporting?? BUT, on the other hand, the MOT station isn't doing there job properly, passing unsafe cars so maybe id report the station. BUT BUT The owner could of done that after the MOT just to sell it. Tough one

I got to admit where i get my mots done he does let me off alot but tells me to get it done at some point but if its dangerous he will fail it so i think alot of people these days have a someone they know that will pass it without being too picky

I have known people to take a car for an mot with a code reader still plugged in so as to extinguish a light thats not supposed to be on at the time of the test. Once the mot is issued there's nothing that can be done I wouldn't have thought. You could blame the test station because how could you possibly prove it was not working when it was tested and that the owner didnt do it at a later date.

Did you buy from a trader or private? If a trader who MOTs their own vehicles before selling I'd say yes definitely report them.

If it was an individual who just took it to his local place, mistakes can be made I suppose.

It was an individual, he was quite heavily into his green peace work which was quite funny as my work involves trying to blow up the world!

My thoughts are, if I report the garage then maybe it will be investigated and proven to be safe or dodgy, granted they could have just missed the light not flashing up but these things are there for our safety, what if I found out while trying to avoid hitting a person?

If the garage had done it surly they would of known it was just a simple sensor?

If it was a private sale, complaining to the seller is probably less likely to achieve anything but aggro, unless you're really serious about it and what to go for prosecution? Equally though, it's possible the seller didn't know about it (you never know) so he might be interested to know about it so he changes the garage he uses for his own car? Probably is worth dropping him a line... You coud try that tack and see how he reacts?
Depending on that, can you amend ebay feedback this far down the line?

As for reporting the MOT garage, well like others say, it won't be possible to prove the light was blocked out at the time of MOT, but I guess VOSA might up their monitoring of the garage? Not sure how they do it, but maybe chuck a couple of covert test vehicles their way to suss them out maybe?
