Good suggestion and I hadn't thought of it, but tbh I don't think it would have made a differece really, the industrial hose was just too hard and stiff. So I went and bought some ordinary automotive hose and it's all sorted now. Lashed it alongside the original metal pipe and ran it all the way up to where it was easy to cut into that and join.

Just a temporary fix to get the car back on the road while I sort out permanent replacement.
The original power steering fluid is horrible btw, yucky dark brown instead of the proper red :(
