70 PSI at idle?

Post by Merlin » Mon Oct 28, 2013 10:54 am

Does 70 odd PSI oil pressure at idle sound in the correct ball park? I know the service manual says anything over 10 PSI at idle is good and over 50 PSI @ 3K rpm. My engine is far from standard though :?

Could my modded engine (has balancer shaft delete kit) and slightly viscous oil really produce 70 odd PSI oil pressure at idle? Does that sound right? Or is my gauge over reading somehow?

I am running some crappy oil through the engine to clean it out. Before it gets hooned new high spec oil will be in there ;)

Is this at a cold start?

Yeah. I havent monitored it, or driven it, for long enough yet.

Do you expect that to drop down once it is warm? I suppose it would.

That's just under 5 bar, so yes sounds completely plausable when cold.
My 924 runs over 5 bar cold, just over 3 bar warm.

Awesome. I'll have a proper look when it is warm. I have only just finished wiring power for the gauge back lights so I didn't see what the PSI was when I was driving it in the dark

Cold start mine will go to about 6 BAR which is about 88 PSI over time as the engine warms it will go to about 1.1BAR when the engine is up to temp. Remember though that most oil filters have a bypass on them which means that anything over 5 BAR will open the bypass and let oil through unfiltered (and so flush the crap that the filter has cleaned out!) So keep the revs to a min till the gauge is warm.

Great info cheers. It will be getting a brand new filter when it gets an oil swap.

Now I have had some driving time I know the deal:

Cold Idle - 80 PSI
Hot idle - 35/40 PSI
Hot 3K+ rpm - 80 PSI
