Hiya everyone, I'm joe. Currently driving a toyota corolla t-sport with a few mods. Just got bored of it and was looking at skylines but I saw a red lude on eBay at £1600 and fell in love. It's a 98 2.2 manual, drove lovely, a little bit of rust on the rear arches but not masses. The guy wants to do a straight swap. The only thing holding me back is that I don't know much about them. Do I've got a few questions.

How cheap and available are parts such as coil overs, mugen bumpers and splitters, etc?

What is an easily achievable power gain without having to go to the realms of forging and Forced induction?

What are they like as daily drivers?

Any help would be appreciated guys and I know you probably get nubes like me all the time asking these questions but I can't seem to find the answers I want, cheers in advanced

Welcome to the forum.

Coilovers, splitters and aftermarket body kits (front bumpers and skirts) etc are readily available for ludes. Generally not as cheap as (e.g.) Civic parts, because they're not as common. There's a brand new set of BC coilovers for sale on here atm, as it happens.

Mugen front bumpers for 4th gens are rare as, but 5th gen ones do come up occasionally.

They're excellent as daily drivers, reliable, comfortable, quick etc. but the fuel economy isn't great. 28-30 mpg is all you should expect out of a 2.2 vtec.

Rear arch rust is the known weak spot on 5th gens, so if that one's already going, get rust treatment inside the arch and inside the inner arch asap to stop it getting worse, or get it repaired and treated.

There's a black 5gen SiR for sale on here atm which is in excellent condition and at a good price - you might want to take a look at that one (same guy that has the BC coilovers!).

Tuning wise, the highest power standard lude is 217bhp (Type-S) but that one is very hard to tune, so if that's something you're looking to do, go for a standard Vti/SiR.

imho the lude has the pooorest selection of aftermarket parts of the honda range. Lots will end up being custom as there are not enough about. quite rightly though things like coilover and bumpers are easy enough.

daily driver will be a great car. you will only get 22-28 combined if you drive gentle though.

Power gains will cost you monies. two reasons: honda did a decent job of getting the power out of the engine in the first place and as said before, parts are less available for the h22 than say the B18 or any skyline or pretty much any car, lol...

you can get maybe 25bhp for a bit under a couple of grand after you factor in labour and fannying about.. lol. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Check your bushes and the rear calipers. also the cam bung seal and rocker cover for leaks. not major but a pain. Check for smoke on over run and vtec change over.

rev it like a motorbike and you will love it. best you'll get is 14mpg though :lol:

Yes you can.. There were two types of fogs available. JDM one which are bigger and UKDM fogs which are small circular fogs.

The 4ws seemed to work fine but if it goes is it a problem?

What will be needed to get the same/similar power to the atr?

I think I gave a perfectly fair assessment tbh! :P That is the only known weak spot though (unlike rear sills, 'A' pillar and sunroof on top, for us 4th gen owners...)

re: mpg, yes, my 28-30 mpg is the top end figures you could expect to achieve. LLL's 22 - 28 mpg are the normal range you should expect to get.
