You do know I work in insurance too?

Back when I had my BB4, the security I had on it, which did reduce the insurance a fair bit (was 21 with 1 years NCB with it kept on a public road in not a particularly lovely area!) was:
- Thatcham Cat 1 alarm / immobiliser
- Keyless entry
- and believe it or not, a snap off steering wheel!!

The snap off steering wheel actually made a surprisingly large difference too (well can't easily steal a car without a steering wheel!)

At the end of the day, one of the things that will keep the insurance down the most, depending on your area of course, will be where you keep it parked over night. My trike for example, the insurance pretty much halved in price between keeping it in my front garden and keeping it on the road outside my house, because I live in SE London. If I could park it in a garage, or even build a shed in the front garden for it, then the insurance would drop even more but alas neither of those are viable options.

Also, it sounds obvious, but try ringing different companies as well as doing quotes online, as you'll be surprised just how much difference you can get. My Aerodeck had prices ranging from £600 for the year up to £2900 for the year with different companies but the same details.

I used to work in insurance too, usually motor insurance (household insurance did my head in).

Back in the 90's (yeah i remember them well), Thatcham Cat 1 & 2 Alarms used to give quite hefty discounts, circa 10% for a cat 2 and 15% for a Cat 1. Car security was generally pretty jobby then, so insurers gave good rewards for those who spent out on an alarm, provided of course if was fitted by a VSIB approved fitter (now the TRI as the VSIB went under in 2009!)

Things are different now, manufacturers car security has evolved and pretty much most cars come off the shelf with a decent system. Hence the discounts for having a thatcham cat 1 or 2 security system will generally only see you a couple of percent discount, if any at all.

Even Trackers see little discount, but more often the case with high value cars (or desirable cars such as porsche etc) the insurers insist on a Tracker being fitted before they will provide theft cover. No discount is given if it is a compulsory discount.

Same applies to Thatcham Cat1 or Cat2 on some high grouped cars, where it is a condition that one is fitted before theft cover is provided. No discount is given as it is a compulsory requirement.

For those of you with compulsory Thatcham requirements on your Lude, i'd be looking to change Insurer when it falls due for renewal. Yes the Lude is quite a high rated car, but with values generally running from £300 to £1200, insisting on one is a bit antiquated. There are plenty of Insurers that don't require a Thatcham system on a Lude, it is silly spending £300 on an alarm for a car worth £500!
