5th cut out

Post by Fons[DutchGuy] » Fri Jan 03, 2014 9:51 pm

Well yesterday I had a little drive out with the camera when the car stopped on me, she did this before so I thought no hassle.
In the previous times she would start after 2 or 3 attempts and than it wouldn't bring any trouble for months...
This time however I got it to a nearby parking area with a lot of trouble, gave the car some rest after witch she started again. We decided to call it a day since it was already getting late, so I was on the way to get my bud home and it stopped again as I just went past my own house  . Decided not to risk it and turned around to my place, my mate had to stay over and get a ride from his girl next morning...

Now the symptoms:
She cuts out as if I would turn the key to the off position (and the green key light in the desh go's on).
When I give it some taps on the steering column all the lights light up briefly.
After some firm taps the lights stay on (as if its the light check before starting the car).

My guess is the key mechanism but I'm not sure (haven't been under there yet)..
Am I right? Is this common? If yes, what is it and how to fix it...

Many thanks in advance, this is a bummer since I really want to get started on my arm long mod list

It will most probably be the ignition switch. I've just started having the same problem

Yeah I had to do it on my old 5th gen. It's a little bit awkward but you shouldn't have a problem ;) there is 1 screw that's a bit of a pain to get out because it's at the back of the switch

Ignition switch on 5th gens is a common fault, so yes almost certainly that. Fixed by replacing the switch part IIRC (several others have done this on here).

it was a recall so your Honda dealer might fix it

had mine done, but that was some years back

I did an ignition switch change on my dads 99 civic coupe as it would be happily driving along and then engine cut out. it did this several times before I diagnosed it as the ignition switch.
Fairly simple fix. lots of crawling around though

found a guide to change one but for an accord - but quite similar

Oki, had contact with the local honda dealer. I'll get a call on monday to let me know if they'll do it under recall policy, if not the part will set me back €75,-.
Not to outrageous but its hurting my car lowering budget.
Lets just hope they'll do it for free :scaredtoss:
