Failed my Mot :/

Post by Turbomick1985 » Thu Feb 13, 2014 6:52 pm

So took my car for MOT on Wednesday and it failed :( failed on emissions, engines smokes a bit at high revs, need to swap my engine >.< gutted now and I'm at a loss what to do, I found a garage with a great bunch of friendly mechanics and they said its not a big job to swap a prelude engine and will charge me £350 to swap and will need to hav car for about two days so I just need to find an engine, I've used that 1stchoice.co.uk and I've had quotes from 400-700 for a full engine, I found a place that will 'remanufacture' the engine for £1000 and I will get unlimited mileage warranty for a year not sure what to do, I don't want to scrap car I love having it
No questions really just wanted to vent a small bit .... I feel a small bit better now

Is the engine definitely that bad?
My lude failed the last mot on high emissions, but after fitting a new lambda sensor it passed straight away with the emissions right down where they need to be.

it has 151K on the clock now and i havnt always been gentle with it and my dad absolutely abuses it when he gets a hold of it, so was plannin to swap for a fresher engine anyway, i dont think a lambda sensor will sort this :/ when you rev it high like 6-7k thers a cloud you cant see through, ive read up on that terraclean but it will be a job for the fresher engine not the knackered one

Um...a new engine because of high emissions and some smoke is a bit extreme isn't it? 150k isn't massive mileage, I've seen 250k+ on the same engines. Reving to 6-7k is normal for these cars, unless you've let the oil get dangerously low.

See the same concerns here:

Personally, a new lambda sensor is usually the main culprit. Also have you got a decat?

I would seriously look at a few other things first, just doesn't make sense to me. :?

When was it last serviced and has the EGR system ever been cleaned out?

Mines on 140k with fluctuating oil levels due to leak and it sees the other side 5000rpm on a regular basis with a puff of smoke on vtec and mine sailed through emissions today! Failed on a shed load of other stuff tho haha

Remembering from another thread, this is a 2.0 isn't it, rather than a vtec?

So what did they reckon was actually worn out in the engine and causing it to smoke.
Piston rings? Valve seals? There are tests they should do before condeming the engine!

Not exactly round the corner, but not a million miles away - if you want to bring it over to mine we can do a compression test to see if there's anything wrong there (I can't do a leak down test, on account of not having a compressed air line).
