Post by newkid » Wed May 28, 2014 4:32 pm

I know this was posted at Christmas and for some it might not have been the best time after buying presents but Halfords are doing there socket sets half price again so might help those that missed out.

I've been using the same Teng socket set for a good 10 years now.
Nothing has rounded off.
Nothing has snapped*.
Nothing has bent.

*Well I did snap one thing, but that is more my fault for trying to undo a crank pulley with 3/8 drive.

My Draper Expert set is still going strong after 18 years of heavy/sustained use.

Only socket I've had to replace was an 8 mm I managed to crush the walls on slightly, by using it as the centre on a gear puller while I had a metre of lever on the other end of the screw (it did the job, but squeezed the socket end into a triangular hole   ) and a 10mm that I hammered over the end of a bolt that had rounded off.

There's nothing actually wrong with the 10mm socket, I've just never been able to get the bolt back out of it  ( :hurr: one day, when it's least expecting it, I WILL prevail... )

Broken a good few 3/8" bits and pieces in cheap socket sets mind  I have 2 Teng Tool small socket sets and they're great quality, but have a small range of sockets each and the sockets are ridiculously hard to get off the end of the extensions for some reason

Halfords set has imperial sizes, so thats a waste of money and have never used imperial

iv only ever come accross bolts from exhaust in imperial that i could only use a spanner for which i have my dads old set.

get yourself a decent set.

Britool, Mactools, Snap-on or Blue Point, Teng are all good. Snap-on lifetime guarantee is easier to replace then Halfords.

Imperial sockets are great for hammering onto rounded & rusty metric bolts, as size wise they sit inbetween the metric sizes; rarely used but sometines a lifesaver.

I find imperial to be very useful on old bolts. When they've corroded enough that the proper metric socket is loose, a near equivalent imperial can fit it very snuggly :D

They can also be used to undo crash barrier bolts...
