5th Gen Red Top

Post by Churley » Sat Jun 28, 2014 11:18 pm

Continuing the farce of my attempt to find an unmodified red top. Saw this on Gumtree http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-moto ... to-content Looks like an original, high mileage and a bit of rust around the arches (what Prelude doesn't though!) Been for sale for a month which seems like a bit of a long time for a supposedly desirable car.

Asked the seller why he changed the cambelt and then went on to sell the car straight away - he said the crank pulley was loose, the woodruff key fell into the cambelt housing and so he had to get it out and thought he might as well change the belt at the same time. He says categorically that the cambelt didn't snap. Please forgive my mechanical ignorance but does the above sound possible and could it have done any damage? I would have thought that if it was wobbling enough that the woodruff key fell off this could damage the crankshaft.

Anyone know the car? Got any opinions?

Crank pulleys and keys are something that can fail on H22's and people do get away with just changing the pulleys and key, so that part at least is a wholly believable story.

No idea on the likelihood of damaging the cambelt though, not having had the bottom of the engine apart on an H22.
