He can't SORN it if it's not in his name though? Which it isn't until the V5 comes through with his name on it?
My bb4 is taxed but not SORN'd. Already taxed when I bought it, not been insured under me. Only thing I've had through the post is a tex renewal notice (runs out end of this month) which says I can re-tax it at the post office and only need to take the MOT with me (not insurance)...
something not working right in the system there - DVLA obviously have the car showing as insured
Tax has expired but I can't declare the BA8 as SORN yet (I don't think?), because I don't have the new V5 through. It was insured for a day when I brought it home, not insured since (obviously).

Re: insurance help
You don't need any documents to tax at a post office now as it's all on the MID database

Its often useful to take the insurance documents though, as sometimes it can take a few days for cars to appear on the MID.

Fail for the DVLA...
Received the V5 for the BA8 this morning (the breaker) so I decided I'd try and be legal.
Went on-line to do a SORN, fill in the V5 details and reg number and it says the following;

(presumably this is 'recent change' of the change of registered keeper to me)
Bollocks to trying to be legal then!

Unable to use service
Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.

Great... So I try to do the right thing and SORN my vehicle (on 2 occasions) but the Government's system says no...
Result?
Today I get an £80 through the post FFS!
Not taking that jobby lying down

In other news though, the bb4's previous owner still appears to have it insured?

Nope.
I copied and pasted it above though, does that count?
The letter is interesting... The front page tells you you owe them money, you're drokked and the various ways to pay and is signed etc. at the bottom (i.e. that's the end of the letter).
so there's nothing I can do about it then?

Throw it on the table and notice that the back has a section titled "I wish to provide the following information in relation to this alleged offence:" and some back lines underneath it.
So this appeal that you're not telling me I can make, or how to do so... I'm guessing that I fill that bit in then and send it back to you?!

Today I got the response letter from the 'information I returned' and the fuckers say they have made the correct decision.
I can lodge a dispute, but to do that, I have to request another form from them!
(which I shall of course be doing).

Incidentally, it STILL won't let me declare the thing SORN'd online!!!
