Anyone using a car cover?

Post by Mattbigwood » Wed Oct 15, 2014 3:41 pm

I'm planning on getting the rust done on the wheel arches of my Lude and thought I might buy a car cover to give a bit of protection over the winter. Any pros and cons of using a cover?

Beware, that if any of your panels have ever been painted after it left the factory, there is a chance of micro blisters forming due to the micro climate that the cover creates.

For a 'fitted' type cover, stored outside, IME;
Pro's - keeps tree sap, bird jobby and cats off your paintwork.
Con's - have a habit of blowing off, leaving condensation/damp on the paintwork that can cause blistering, or can rub/chafe the paintwork over folds in the body

For a 'fitted' type cover stored indoors, no cons IMO.

For one of those 'cocoon' type covers, stored outside, I can't see any cons other than cost (purchase price and on-going electric bill) IMO

Cheers, someone once warned me about the folds rubbing the paintwork but I didn't know about the micro climate issue.

Iv been using a car cover for 5 years on my Prelude and I caress paintwork everyday.

No issues.

Make sure the cover is a breathable cover. The car will get wet but it protects against Crap, rain dust and climbing cats. It's tied down with elastic cable so won't blow away.

Also my car is heavily sealed so the car cover just drifts over the paintwork like silk.
