If he like the guitar, the neck, feel/action etc then there is always the possibility of upgrading the pups in the future.
I'm like a gorilla when it comes to soldering though. In my ignorance is unsoldered the wires from the pups rather than the switch when i took it apart. Made a bit of a hash resoldering so i may have to buy some more Squier pups anyway.
I've assembled the body (no neck or strings yet, still got to finish the neck) and plugged it into an amp and it buzzes/hums like fook. I've replaced the bridge and control plate with a black set, but they are painted, so these might be causing earthing issues. I also had to rewire the ground between the volume & tone pot as it was two short for the holes in the new control plate. I'm convinced at is an earthing problem (it hums regardless of where the pup selector switch is) and if i tap the pups they do make a noise though the amp.
So i need to change back the bridge and control plate to the original to eliminate the new painted one, check the jack is soldered the right way round and then check all the earths. I'm jobby at electronics, not done any since i left school nearly 30 years ago

I was thinking about changing from a 3 way switch to a 4 way with a parallel connection, but the wiring scares me too much!
