Car won't start

Post by semicolin » Wed Jan 28, 2015 9:48 am

Got back yesterday after a 4 week stint in Australia.

Car won't start. Got some help from a very nice RAC guy who happened to be out sorting a dead battery on another car down the street, he was a Honda fan :)

I was very tired from traveling but I'll do my best to remember everything he checked.

Battery is fine although eventually died, tried jump starting after it died.

NOID? Test came back fine

No spark to the plugs

Distributor cap is clean.

Pretty sure there was no spark from the coil, things get hazy at this point though.

I'll be going out shortly to investigate further.

Any ideas guys?

Any help is very much appreciated

Does the fuel pump prime? Can you hear it buss from under the rear seats when you first turn the ignition on?

I didn't listen for that but the smell of fuel was noticeable.

I should add that the car was started last week, started second turn of the key, was left to run for 10-15 mins but not driven.

There was a big drop in temperature between now and the last time it was started.

Coolant was pretty low, I don't know if this would come into the equation, it was topped up yesterday

Four weeks in Aus? Lucky sod.

If the fuel pump is running then the main relay is ok. Have a good listen for it to be sure.

If no spark, then it sounds like a distributor problem?

My starter motor broke on me recently, probably a combination of the cold weather and its age. Will your car still bump start?

4 weeks stuck on a boat mate, missed new year, wasn't much tbh

I'm thinking it'll be the coil, just wanting to hear more suggestions before I start throwing money at it.

I reckon the the starter motor is fine, the car still cranks as normal. Going to have a go at bump starting it later, you never know haha

If it turns over, the starter motor is fine.

Sounds like it's priming fine.

It's started snowing fairly heavy so I any do much trouble shooting.

Throwing on a new dizzy sound like a good idea?

Sounds like a go-er to me - if in doubt, throw parts at it ;) :D
