Whether it's a steel or alloy sump, it shouldn't be soft! That sounds not too good... :?

I take it to work every morning and let it heat up before I go. Then vtec works fine every gear until I get to about 8miles then it stops In 3rd and 4th ?? Arrrrgggghhhhhhhh

Steel dumps are thinner than alloy ones (steel is comparatively stronger so can be made thinner).
Oil heats up more slowly than the coolant.
what oil are you using?

sounds like a restriction in the exhaust.

I started having strange issues about a month after a track day. The cat had gradually started to disintegrate and get clogged up. Had it happen on another car and can only describe it as 'breathlessness' under high load.

You wouldn't notice it so much in the lower gears, but under load in the higher gears it would start to feel really down on power and quite unusual.

Well changed my vtec solinoid tonight so I'll see how it is tomorrow if not fixed mechanic looking at in wed so hope it will get sorted
