Oil. But not a lude Question

Hey folks,
Dont own my lude anymore but have a quick question as I still find this the best/funniest forum.I've been on. I have a runabout Civic 1.6 Exec (52plate) for my wife. Last year when Halfords had a price cut on its own oils and I bought two bottles of 5w30 - one was a Ford 'blend' and the other a GM. Since then i believe I put the right bottle in however is there really a difference? I want to do an oil change on that car on the next few weeks while doing my Civic Diesel too.

Not heard of Halfords doing different Ford and GM blend oils?
The actual specifications are the API/ACEA grades. If they're the same, then the oil is the same.

If the viscocity is the same (5w-40) they're both the same type of oil (e.g. both for petrol engines not one for diesel engines) same type of base (e.g. semi synthetic or synthetic etc.) then they'll be fine.

I think that the manufacturer names on the bottle just relate to the standard they meet - there's probably nothing to it in the grander scheme of things, it's just box ticking so that you can buy the oil that your service book mandates. For example, the service book for my Audi states that the oil you put in must be certified as VW502.00 or better, so if you did as the book told you then you'd buy the 'VW' oil at Halfords, at about £7 more than the vanilla version of the same viscosity iirc.

I'd hazard a guess and say that it's all meaningless, and provided it's a decent oil of the correct viscosity & base it should do the job. It's not like another manufacturers blend is going to be full of sand, they all need to lubricate at the end of the day

I might be wrong, but aren't most oils multi-purpose these days?? It's been a long time since I've had a can kicking around the house which was diesel or petrol specific, although I only buy oil from a couple of places so I might just be living a sheltered existence.

I think there are multi-use oils now, but in general diesel and petrol oil is still different. Diesel oil has additives to neutralise the additional sulphur in diesel.

Just for your info Lovedoctor, you may already know this. 10w40 is what should be used in the 1.6 civic. It actually is quite important in this engine as it's the last of the famous D series engines. We see a lot of these engines burning a lot of oil to the point that it brings on the Eml for vtec failure. I assume the diesel is the ictdi? 2.2? Again 5w30 fully synthetic. Again, very important the engine gets the correct grade. Just FYI bud. Good luck

Not to question you but are you sure mate? Every website - Halfords, Opie etc always thrown up 5w30 full synthetic as the fit or even 0w-30 for my wee Motor. Can't remember the model code but it's the same engine as found in the 1.6EP2 sport. For the 2.2 I always use 0w30 Castrol Edge. Expensive but car runs well on it. Doesn't help it takes 5.8l!

As a point I actually have the EML light on but its code reads for the Cat convertor - changed last year due to corrosion for a pattern part and bollox they are the same! Light been on since

Well I have worked for Honda for almost 9 years now and that is what Honda have always recommend up until a few weeks ago

. But that only applies to new models now and up to 3 years old. Those oils are too thin for that particular D series motor. But on the plus side, you'd never need to change it

0w30 is ok for the diesel as its only the cold rating that is slightly different. But the hot rating on the others is too thin. I can check at work for you tomorrow just to make sure they haven't changed it. But I'm pretty sure they haven't
