I've spoken to Donald, his engine would be the simplest to swap, but I just bought this prelude and the engine has gone straight away and I don't really have any spare cash for another engine, so I'm looking for a very low budget way of doing this.
So far the most likely option is a jdm SIR engine, just not sure if it's obd1 or 2

TBH it doesn't matter really - just buy it and you can just swap all the ancillaries (loom, injectors, alternator etc.) off your existing engine onto the new one.

If it's a jdm 5th gen (1997) is it likely to be obd2? If not and it's obd1 would I need to change the oil pump? (I've heard you have to change that)

No need to change the oil pump. That's buried away inside the cam cover, with no electrical connections...

It was on US forums where I have seen this; maybe it's just USDM then; apparently they have a crank and cylinder sensor in the oil pump on the H22A4 motor. I guess JDM and Euro motors don't have this, thankfully.
Hopefully I've got my hands on a 97 JDM H22A to swap for my dead H22A8. I would prefer an 8 or a 7 but this H22A is too good a deal to pass up.
