Not wishing to body lemonade on the party but mine failed 3 years ago for the rust on the bottom of the arch like yours. The reason given was it weakened the rear seat belt anchorage point. Plate welded in the same day and it passed.
I have kleptomania,
But when it gets bad,
I take something for it.

I won't be overly surprised if it fails for any one of many reasons  At least I'll have a hit list of things to sort out over the next week or so - If welding is required then it'll only delay things by a month or so, I've got rear arch panels in the garage and some cash set aside for the work, just not quite enough to do it straight away.

I've waited over 4 years, it'll be nice to just drive her to the MOT centre and back

Argh, the smoke escaped from my alternator this evening (literally - stank of burning too) and now it doesn't seem to be charging :x :x :x :x

Bloody car!!! Back to the garage with my multimeter I go

Anyone got a working alternator laying around? Think I may be needing one in a hurry...

Cheers Phil, appreciated, but for some reason it's started working again. I'm going to play it by ear, it should get me to the garage and back on Friday so I can investigate further later.

It does make me wonder where the smoke was coming from though...

I had a quick check and there's nothing obviously wrong, I suspect it was some old oil burning off or something similar, it was the longest I'd run the engine for years so the exhaust was probably hot enough to burn off any spills... I hope :)
