Day Seven
Auronzo to Hall [1679M to date]
A meandering route west and then east again took us over the border and onto Lienz.

More back roads, past a half-buried Beetle and over the old Gerlos Pass. The garage owner just after the pass asked us if we'd been nervous. Everyone is, apparently. "Not really" we lied. The narrowness and blindness of the road, plus the lack of barriers and in some cases tarmac, allowed for no safe photo opportunities. Three Italian lads on 2 Monsters and a Gixer had been 5 minutes behind us. They loved it, and so did we. The cheerios we got when they passed us further down the road made two old uns in a Honda feel like members of the biking fraternity.

Our stop for the night was at Hall, near Innsbruck. A lovely town with a pleasant park full of welcome shade.

Day Eight
Hall to Wasserburg [1798M to date]
Nice at it is, Hall was only incidental to our target, which was Absam, just next door. Absam was the home village of Jakob Stainer, a violin maker I wanted to research in the local museum. The museum now opens on Fridays and Saturdays: it was a Tuesday.
So we set off for Mittenwald, a place famous for its painted houses and stringed musical instruments. This time, the museum was open - and excellent.

Our curiosity had stopped us just after the border into Germany. What is with Tyroleans sticking cars onto things?

This was another museum-ish. Bikes and cars. All for sale. Closed, though.

We'd also stopped twice at the request of police and their roadblocks. The G7 Summit was due to take place nearby. Bugger. 17,000 police officers and who knows how many media oiks meant that there was no accommodation for miles. Move along, now, there's nothing to see here.
We drove east via a private road, then north to Wasserburg-am-Inn, a walled town on high ground forming a 300 degree loop of the river.
