Diesel oil in petrol engine

Post by Ruurd » Fri Aug 14, 2015 6:21 pm

I've just picked up my lude from the garage but noticed on the receipt they used HELIX DIESEL HX7 10W-40.
When I brought the car in I did mention the high mileage and asked to keep that in mind when choosing an oil, so that could be why they chose this one?
Basicly I am wondering if this could be harmful or not, I assume not - but better be safe!

Thanks
Ruurd

i thought the diesel oil had stuff in it that would affect the seals on a petrol engine??

Diesel and petrol used to have different oils (I think primarily because of the sulphur content in diesel?) but I think now a lot of oil manufacturers do the same oil for both petrol and diesel (for better or worse...)

Shell Helix is good oil btw, so they haven't gone cheap on you at least ;)

I best call them tomorrow to double check, as I did see there is a Shell Helix for diesel engines and one for petrol.

Thanks for your quick comments!

I don't think you'll have any problem. Shell's own website states "For gasoline, diesel and gas engines; also suitable for biodiesel and gasoline/ethanol blends"
http://www.shell.com/global/products-se ... 10w40.html

On the other hand, if this was for a full oil change, I'd get them to either refill or give you a note on headed paper to say that it will be OK. The additives in diesel engine oil aren't dealt with particularly well by petrol cats.

Ok I was told the right oil was used but 'the computer' put the incorrect discription on the receipt.
I have taken the lads name and will keep the receipt incase any problem occur but he seemed confident.

Thanks for the help!
