Running lean

Post by Bio » Sun Aug 23, 2015 8:13 am

Hey guys,

Been doing some work on the car this weekend to try and take a few things off the list, and when checking my plugs to make sure all is good, it looks like I'm running a bit lean (white deposits on the plugs).
I've not really been able to find out much about running lean on these cars when stock. Everyone that has issues seems to be running something funky or after market fuel rails.

I've changed the Rad, Thermostat (old one seems to be stuck open), and cleaned the IACV this weeknd. The dizzy cap has been done as well as leads, but the Rotor arm has not (screw totally stuck). So I'm wondering where to start next to be honest.
Lambda was changed a couple of years ago.

Any ideas?

When were the filters (mainly fuel filter) last changed?

White deposit is probably oil. Is your motor using much?

How do you know your running lean? Plugs could be old.

I thought white was lean and black and gooey would be oil. This is a sort of dusty white.
The plugs are about 25k miles old, replaced them back in 2012 with ZFR6FIX-11. I guess they could just be old?

Fuel filter is actually a good shout as I've not done that yet.
The motor is using about 200ml every 1500 miles so not LOADS of oil, and I have a suspicion that my cam end seal is leaking at the moment as well as my auto tensioner AGAIN.

white deposits could also be water!!! Should be light brown if lean or black/sooted if rich

If you post up a pic of what the plugs look like, we should be able to tell you.

:? What link do you think there is between auto tensioner and losing oil?

For reference this is a plug from an engine that was burning oil pretty badly:
