Help with compression test results.

Post by Bludge » Thu Oct 15, 2015 3:30 pm

I borrowed a compression tested and checked my engine today, from drivers side to passenger side the results were as follows

1: 266
2: 256
3: 260
4: 168

Im guessing number 4 being that low is bad? it also took a fair bit more cranking to get it up that high, where as the others got there numbers after 3/4 strokes.

Where do i go from here?

*EDIT* Also, 1000 posts! woo. only took me 2 and a half years...

its very easy to do, just time consuming. just don't get confused with the order like I did one night, nearly wrecked Will's lude  lol

Yep, don't know what the correct specialist is (not got manual to hand) but no.4 is definitely way too low...

Not really filling me with confidence! Lol

So is it likely to improve the compression then? I head something about diagnosing the problem by dropping some oil in the chamber and retesting to see if it improves?

I believe the method you describe will only tell you if the piston rings are worn, and don't be tempted to test the compression with too much oil in the cylinder as it wont compress and may ruin the small/ big end bearings.

Did you do a wet compression test with a drop of oil in each cylinder. This will tell you how you rings are.
