Yea there is a fair few bits to look out for on these.

I will list the worst case items, that i have personally seen many of, working at Honda for best part of 9 years lol. The engine itself is good if looked after. But its the jobby bolted to it thats the issue lol. Clutch and Dual mass flywheels burn out/sieze up. Alternator bearings fail. Water pumps leak. Fuel pumps can fail. Injector seat seals leak. Exhaust manifolds crack. Glow plug relays can fail. The chassis stuff, brakes ect are actually very good. Done a few timing chain sets too.

Front suspension top arm ball joints are starting to fail now. These are all problems i have seen many of on this particular model. The most being clutch and flywheels. The flywheel is dual mass and the clutch is self adjusting type. What happens is the flywheel usually locks up, causing excessive clutch wear to the point where the adjusting mechanism goes beyond what it can handle. Then bang, no drive.

The trick is to check for rattles on start up and on idle. Check for any abnormal noises. Check the clutch. A heavy pedal and very low or very high biting point will indicate a bad clutch. If when starting it kind of jumps and doesnt start but starts second time this can indicate the flywheel is broken. For god sake DO NOT buy one that you cannot prove the service history on. They are particular on oil grade too.

Hope this helps.

Chris.

Bloke that rents the workshop near my barn bought one of these, very cheap because the flywheel was drokked.

He did that, the clutch and then the timing chain started rattling, so did that as well.

He's otherwise well pleased with it though. Was a bargain cause he was doing the work himself.

I've just bought a new VW Golf GT 1.4 Bluemotion petrol. 1.4 you may ask! But it's 150 ps. Really moves. £30 a year road tax - and supposedly can do near 90 mpg. That remains to be seen. Cheaper than a diesel and more efficient. There should be 1 or 2 year second hand ones around if you didn't want new. I was just blown away when I took a test drive. Some consolation for having to get rid of my Prelude 2.2 vtec!

Tell me about it. But if they do I will be expecting some sort of compensation from VW

They won't hold the owners responsible. If anything happens, it will be fines for tax avoidance against vw. But going on their approach so far, I expect the government will just sit there and do nothing.

A friend of mine has an a3 which falls into the emissions category and he's been offered 3k from audi as compensation. Although his road tax is going to increase...
