Honda Prelude for sale North East England T629OHN BE AWARE !

Post by Honda Steve » Sun Dec 27, 2015 7:23 am

After owning several honda's including 2 preludes over the years, I decided it was time for another, this one came available in Trimdon Station County Durham registration T629 OHN recently on a well known website and on the outside looked reasonably well presented on the photos until I discovered this car has a shady past.

Seller claims the vehicle has 150,000 Miles on the clock, however upon closer inspection the car has actually done over 240,000 miles, the mileage on the display was incorrect, showing around 142,000 not digital so very easy to reverse back if you know what you are doing, and on the whole looks like its had most of its life being thrashed by a boy racer.

More worrying is the fact there is no logbook whatsoever not even a new keepers supplement, may have been lost but suspicions are the car is not cosher at all.

MOT history checks confirm the car has indeed 240,000 miles on the clock so if anyone thinking of buying this car I would steer well clear, the owner got very irate that I discovered the mileage discrepancy and claimed the clocks had been changed in 2011 but produced no evidence to support this and as such I walked away from the sale with my money in my pocket saving myself £400 quid.

tbf £400 isnt bad for either of those mileages the shell looks in good nick which is the main deciding factor of preludes of any age

Welcome Steve.
Yep, mot history does indeed indicate it was over 220k in June this year, so it's pretty shocking that the seller isn't being upfront about that with buyers (surely the guy who had it in June must be the same as the current owner?) and thanks for flagging that on here.
That is pretty high miles for a lude, but then again, if it has been well looked after, h22's can go and go.
With second hand cars if this age, it's all in the 'as seen' condition imo and £400 for an A8 last of the line 5th gen is cheap - so if it is in good condition, personally it wouldn't stop me buying.

I wouldn't be happy buying from someone that couldn't be upfront over a £400 car. Selling clocked cars is bang out of order regardless of price imo, and leaves you wondering what else they aren't mentioning.

That said, I'm currently negotiating with a seller who when I asked him whether the car was diesel or petrol he said diesel, but when I popped the bonnet it was clearly the petrol engined version

your buying a second hand car thats well over 10 years old for £400 lets face it for a car for that much to be sold with any mot or tax is a bonus if you buy without checking these things out you deserve what you get.

Having said that people have paid much more just to break a car and still made money on it the rot free shell would be worth £400 to a track guy the engine would just be an anchor anyway first thing you would do would be a H22 swap

Ownership proof should be first on the list, surely?

god only knows what people would make of my 4th gen BB4 if i ever put it up for sale - ive changed the el dials on it three times - so mot history would show some big drops and increases in mileage. does that mean ive clocked the car :? Mileage on clocks shows higher than actual
But like @mercutio says if its over 10 years old your buying what you see in front of you and not what the mileage on the clock says
mind you the DVLA Mot history checker is a really useful tool and anyone thinking of buying a 2nd hand car should be using it ;)

I think the difference here is that according to the OP the seller is trying to pass the car off as a lower mileage example, which is out of order regardless of how cheap the car is.

I'm not saying that you should expect a £400 car to be perfect - what I'm saying is wouldn't it ring alarm bells if a seller was lying to you to help shift a £400 car, when most people would probably take the car regardless of the particulars at that price?
