Can't say I've ever had to put down how many people are in the car for the tunnel.

There is no way for them to check either, as you enter via a barrier, not with a person in a booth.

But yes, the cost is per car, so bring your mates and split the cost!

I wasn't use it for quite long but IMHO for safety reason they have to know how many people they have in train.
