You are right. I will test before I do anything else. Even though the engine is on a stand Steve has a big ba$tard impact gun that will spin the crank pulley

Had a go with Steve's compression tester last night. With the breaker bar we couldn't get the same cranking motion as the starter motor and the impact gun didn't do it properly. But we got fairly even results across the cylinders. With Steve's energetic "cranking" we got each one to roughly 75 PSI. I am in no doubt that the result would be better if the starter motor was cranking it. But since they were even I still see no reason to stop fixing up this engine.

Have some rug!

My H23 manual tensioner arrived today as well as my timing locking tool kit. Got the manual tensioner off eBay for less than £100. On the like of Htune it is £175. The timing locking tool kit locks the cams in place as well as the balance shaft, it also comes with an auto tensioner clamping tool (but I'll never use that).

In the H23 manual tensioner kit is the following:
13404-PT0-004 - ADJUSTER COMP., BALANCER BELT
13415-PT0-000 - BRACKET, BALANCER BELT ADJUSTER
14510-PT0-004 - ADJUSTER COMP., TIMING BELT
14516-PT2-000 - SPRING COMP., TIMING BELT ADJUSTER
14521-P14-A00 - PLATE, ADJUSTER
90014-P14-A00 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER BASE
90015-PT0-000 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER SPRING
90016-PT0-000 - BOLT, TIMING BELT ADJUSTER
90140-P14-A00 - WASHER, PLAIN (11MM)

Also big thanks to Phil for sending me 4G injectors and for continuing this new tradition of sending me bits with modified names on the shipping labels, although this one is a little strange
