Damn IACV

Post by Merlin » Mon Apr 04, 2016 10:06 am

Friday afternoon didn't quite go as planned :( I took the afternoon off to get the MOT done. The car needed an hour or so's work to finish it off before me and Steve drove the car the 2 miles to the MOT station. The first mile and half was great! The engine pulled hard and sounded good, but all of a sudden the engine started misfiring, badly :( It kept stalling and generally felt crap. At this point I thought I had knackered the engine after only 1.5 miles :(

Obviously we couldn't put it through an MOT like this so we went to limp home after letting the car cool. Bizarrely the car started up fine and was idling good :? But as we neared home it started again and got worse as the engine got hotter.

After letting the engine cool again I pulled the car into the garage to pull the spark plugs and see if there was an easily identifiable issue. There was nothing there so I put it all back together and let the car idle for a while to see if I could get it to misfire again. This time it was misfiring heavily at idle and puffing white smoke out of the exhaust  It was the end of the day to I had to leave it like that.

I was beginning to think it was head gasket failure due to the white smoke and the heavy misfire. On the Saturday @Vanzep was over so me, him and Steve started by doing a compression test. The results came back great! very even across all cylinders 8-) Which put me at ease. So we got the car outside (since it was a nice day for once ) and let the car idle and heat up. Sure enough the misfire returned. Vanzep began looking at all the electrical connectors in the engine bay, and while I was round the back of the car looking at all the the white smoke and fluid firing out of the exhaust, it suddenly stopped and returned to a perfect idle! Vanzep had found the cause of the issue! A fooked IACV! The connector on the IACV, while it looked perfect, was dodgy and when you prodded it, it turned on/off the misfire like a switch. The IACV on the car came with the engine.

So after a new IACV the car idled fine and we went out for a spin  Working great once more!! Within two hours on Saturday morning the engine went from being potentially broken to deal of the century

Andy Connolly said that he had a misfire and thought that something was up with the engine, turns out it was a dodgy IACV all along.

All idling fine, no weird sounds from the new manual tensioner with new belts. All timed properly with correct (albeit on the slightly aggressive side) valve clearance and ignition timing at 16 degrees BTDC.

Your car looks great! :D
Those wheels are OZ superleggera? They look nice !

Could you tell me why the ignition timing is setted to 16°?

Thanks, although it looks better with the other bumper & splitter on ;) They are 17" Rota Torque's.

Advancing the timing a little can squeeze a little extra power out of the engine. You are igniting the fuel a sooner, closer to when the piston leaves TDC. I was told by the guys on the FB Honda Prelude Racing Group (some long time Prelude racers) that 16° BTDC will yield the best power.
