Wow a fair bit has happened since I have been away, I cant say that I am sorry I missed it all  I have had my fair share of removing gearboxes although Steve has probably done just as many.

To be fair I only really lifted the box in and out, Nick managed everything else himself.

car is running

Post by vanzep » Wed Jul 27, 2016 5:44 pm

car is running - just swapped the battery over from my BB4 and it fired right up :)
after the first test run it wouldnt start again so gave the starter motor a little tap with the hammer and all was good - so looks like i might need to replace the starter motor which is no biggie :)

there is however a huge amount of vibration through the steering wheel at idle - it all smooths out the instant you move off - so im going to redo all the mounts and torque them up in sequence and hope that this sorts it out. still got to do the cambelt side mount too. :)

clutch, flywheel and gearbox are all very light and smooth so very happy with that and no chatter or noises from the driveshafts which is what got me into doing all this work in the first place :)

Re: Up and running

the lude is up and running as mentioned and i found the starting problem was down to the fact i hadnt tightened the nut on the connection to the starter motor  thats is now sorted

i was going to try and redo all the mounts to the correct torque and in the correct sequence (as shown in the manual) in order to cure the vibration at idle but didnt have a deep 17mm socket so hoping to get that fixed later on..... :)

polybushing the front of the car has made it even more comfortable to drive than it was before which is a pleasant surprise - it now soaks up all the bumps and potholes that the roads in Edinburgh have in abundance.

looking forward to testing it out in vtec this weekend 8-)

Hope going round adjusting the engine mounts sorts the problem for you - as I say, we have the same problem on Lisa's lude since polybush inserts fitted, so am very interested to see how it works out for you! :D

Great news that it's up and running 8-)

cheers wurly :)

the gearbox drain bolt came loose and fell out on Friday night - I heard it bounce up and hit the underneath of the car so slowed immediately - fortunately i was on my way to meet Merlin and 3rd gen steve at the garage which was only 500 yards away so just coasted in. @Merlin had enough MTF and a suitable sized drain bolt and crush washer so it was a 10 minute job to fix and glad to say no damage to the gearbox.
Whew that was a close call.

got hold of a deep 17mm socket so i can tackle the gearbox mount tomorrow...if i cant get a marked improvement by retorquing/aligning all the mounts then im going to put a standard OEM gearbox mount back in - but will leave the front and back mount in place. Ive got all four mounts on the BB4 sikaflex polyd with little or no vibration so in theory i should be able to achieve the same on the BB1.
the BB1 does seem idle a little bit lower than the BB4 so there may be another issue there that is being highlighted by the change in mounts. the vibration ive got at the moment disappears if i raise the idle to 950rmp :?

Also fitted a set new preface nostrils resprayed in black and a FM style cooling in plate in silver which i might repaint in phantom grey :)

Small problem to pay if increasing idle revs slightly, sorts the problem.

Ive redone the torque on the mounts and moved the gearbox one slightly - made no difference so i raised the idle to 950rpm by adjusting the tension on the throttle cable which did make a difference but when i blip the throttle now im getting a bouncing idle - i wonder if im barking up the wrong tree so to speak :? might actually be an issue with the throttle cable itself as it seems to be a bit sticky - i remember rerouting the cable when i got the car as it had all been set wrongly  might also need to clean out the fitv - already done the iacv
rear tow hook arrived today so going to fit that in order to protect the back bumper from careless parkers also got one to go on the BB4. I dont like the look of these things but as both ludes are parked on the street it seems to be a necessity
another downer was i decided to adjust the front arb so it sat squarely but managed to sheer the drop link bolt for the second time  ffs

i was on my way back from Knockhill in the red BB4 on Sunday around tea time where i had been watching Merlin compete in Super Lap Scotland (SLS) :)
good to hear your making progress on your lude - finger crossed it fires right up tonight ;)

Adjusting idle with throttle cable tension will cause mega issues with expansion/heat soak when it gets really hot :o
