Gearbox (?) whining

Post by Drax » Fri Sep 23, 2016 9:41 am

Will's 4g has just had two new front upper wishbones fitted as his bushes were shot and knocking badly.
appart from the offside now being very squeaky  there is a whining noise coming from i can only presume the gearbox or a driveshaft. it wasnt there before, could the new more taut front end be straining anything maybe? or is it more likely a gearbox bearing/seal... im just guessing.

plus, any tests to do to narrow down the problem? the whining only occurs when your moving.

thansk,

Is the whining related to road speed, or engine speed?
Does it change dependant on turning left/right etc?

@wurlycorner the whining gets louder as you go faster, but never too loud as the engine noise drains it out after 2nd/3rd gear. the whining also gets louder as you rev the engine, plus if you turn the wheels the whining appears.

if you are parked up with the engine running, hot or cold, not turning the steering there is no whining.

So if I have understood that correctly, you mean with the engine idling, you don't have the noise, but if you rev the engine (with car not moving) you do get it and the noise gets louder the higher the engine revs?
And the noise seems to increase more relative to engine revs and steering input, than to road speed?
If so, sounds like it could be power steering pump, or one ounce bearings/pulleys on the aux/timing belt side of the engine?

With the engine running, car stationary and engine revved up so you have the noise, what happens if you depress the clutch? (Might help rule out gearbox further).

PS how comes it's always you posting up about wills lude, rather than will himself?

thanks Wurly :)

Just to rule something out, is there a woman within 10 feet of the car when you hear this noise?
