Have you checked the distributor cap itself? Maybe your points are worn out and with a few turns it clears the deposits, happened me on my old ep82 starlet. Had to clean points to make it start. Then it would start all the time until the next time. It's just worth a shot. How about turning the key to ignition on a few times the next morning to keep priming the pump and see if it starts better? Could be a weak pump

dizzy cap and rotor arm are new (aftermarket) parts - checked the cap this morning and only thing i could see is that one of the ht leads (kv85's) seems to be working its way loose off the cap which is a bit odd as its a good tight fit- ive noticed this a few times and just pushed it back on to reseat it - its just the one lead that does this.car still took a few cranks to get going this morning. probably a red herringDaveyBa8 wrote:Have you checked the distributor cap itself? ive put some more fuel system cleaner in and filled up the tank.
it is an odd one as once its fired up its runs spot on and i mean spot on
its a very quick car and super smooth power delivery.....
keep the suggestions coming...as im not going to give up and settle for second best

im going to check fuses, vac lines and fit a brand new (aftermarket) dizzy this afternoon.

all vac lines are good
seems to be missing a couple of fuses from the interior fuse box.
here is a pic - on bottom row 20amp fuse instead of 10amp in ACG-S & 10amp dim dip fuse is missing and 20amp fuse 3rd from end of row where it should be blank
on top row 7.5amp fuse missing from dimp/dip

will need to have a closer look at this

no idea Iain - i thought all fuse boxes would be the same.
I got a translation of the japanese fuse box layout many years back and that what im using to check what should be where.
I found this on the wiki so will cross ref what i have here with that and i can check against the BB4
http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/wiki/in ... ox_diagram
fuse no.5 is the voltage regulator. It has 20amp fuse in it. both wiki guide and guide i have here call for a 10amp fuse.
dont know if this would have any effect but i may swap it out for the correct 10amp fuse.
in the wiki both fuse 6&12 are integrated control unit 6 is listed as except KQ model and 12 is listed as KE model - im guessing but this American/Canadian models.
if both are missing it must be like you say they are options that are not needed
fuse no.8 is shown as blank in both wiki and my guide so i might just remove this

No dim dip unless it's a UK car, only country in the world that enforced the system afaik - thankfully abandoned now!
