My bad.. Thought the coolant temp was that one.. I see there's two under the distributor single white small sensor I take it that's gauge and the two wire white one must be coolant temp makes sense that the fan switch would be there now.. Either way if the fault is still there after swapping coolant temp sensor chances are it's not that unless both are faulty which is unlikely..DaveyBa8 wrote:That's just s fan switch on the housing
Maybe check for any fuel leaks, probably would be minor and just enough to allow fuel leak back slightly. Does it start fine after it's been running for a short while?

I wouldnt worry i owned a lude for 17 years and still dont know how to fix them
dont think there is any fuel leaks i gave it a quick check last week - but i have had two leaks on the fuel pipes on my BB4 and they have never had any impact on starting - it always starts on the button without fail
once the BB1 is started it runs perfect and restarts fine but can occasionally idle about 100rpm lower than norm until given some some revs but ive put that down to a slight blow at the back box
which i must get fixed before the mot

@vanzep I have the same issue, but starts on second start attempt. Tried turning the ignition on/off to test fuel system but no joy. Then next day attempt to jump start it in case of a weak battery, still didn't start first time. I'm thinking it maybe a weak starter motor? Vtec Direct haven't even been able to find the issue - very odd.

If it is the exact same issue then i can tell you what ive changed so far so and save you the hassle
If you take the intake off and spray some cold start directly into the intake manifold then wait one minute it should start first time if not then you probably have a different issue.
I have replaced the starter motor, battery, spark plugs,ht leads, dizzy, iacv, coolant temp sensor, injector relay, main relay, fuel filter and cleaned the intake with carb cleaner and run several courses of fuel line cleaner thru.
Im going to check the fitv in the next day or so as apparently this can cause start up issues from cold.

It cant be anything major i know that - ive also read there is a check valve at the fuel pump that is meant to close when the engine is switched off - this retains fuel pressure to make for easier starting could be a fault there
I will get this fixed

I tested the FITV earlier today and found it was still drawing a bit of air when engine was hot and fans had kicked in so looks like that needs cleaned or replaced. The manual says if there is any suction at the lower tb port when hot then fitv is leaking and should be replaced.
Manual also says that faulty fitv can cause starting issue - will post up if this fixes it
Here is a photo of the test as shown in the manual as jayjay has removed the pics from the wiki section - funny it was there when i posted up on wednesday

Hi vanzep iv been following this thread religiously for over a month as i was having the same issue except a bit worse eventually it just didnt start while i was over 200miles from home so had to leave it at a garage for 3months finally got it back a couple of days ago and it had a new battery, distributor and ecu, ran fine and got it home no problem however when i went to it the next day no start at all sounded like it was about to go but eventually just killed the battery. Made a breakthrough the other day though had my nephew helping me (seriously a car guru) and we rebuilt the distributor out of the standard one and the brand new one with a wee bit of custom wiring since they were a slight bit different and presto fired up straight off the bat and again this morning at -2°c. Sorry for the massive post but i know how frustrating it is so i thought id share what worked for me

well i guess i may have bitten off a bit more than i could chew....
rather than take off the existing fitv i decided to clean up a spare tb i have and reset the fitv on it and fit that along with a new thermal gasket - all fitted ok and car fired right up but....
now as soon as i touch the accelerator i get a mega bouncing idle - ive bled it 4 times but cant get rid of it
