EGR valve trouble

Post by alinton » Sat Dec 31, 2016 4:21 pm

Hi all,

Well the ole girl has developed a couple of faults recently, and I've only now got chance to have a look.

1. The ABS warning light is on.
2. The XYL was driving the other day and called to say it had gone all lumpy, and stopped a couple of times while idling. The Check Engine light was on.

When she got home, without incident, it came on again just as she pulled in.

I checked the error codes, and I'm getting ABS flashing, of course, plus 12 and 36.

12 seems to be Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR VALVE LIFT SENSOR) - what/where is this please?

But I'm in the dark about 36. Car doesn't have traction control.

Any thoughts on all of this please?

Thanks

A

Do you have the standard ECU fitted?

You sure it's not a 4 plug ecu? If it was it would explain the code 36, which can be ignored anyway.....

Oh - sorry it is. I forgot I'm using that one.

What about 12 then?

The EGR valve is on the top of the inlet manifold near the distributor. It's easy to remove (2 nuts, albeit it can be fiddly to get a spanner/socket on one of them) and easy to check and clean.
Some owners have done write ups on here before (although I can't find them on a quick search right now  ) or it should be described in the Honda service manual.
 I might have described doing the job on either my green ukdm or Lisa's black JDM, actually (links in my signature below). My money's on the black JDM, so start with that one.

Thanks - any idea of what's likely to have happened to it?

I couldn't find your write up Wurly, but found this one http://www.ludegeneration.co.uk/post15230.html

Also lots of info from the wise people in The Collective about the EGR, incl. the possibility of removing it.

Something to do tomorrow!

Ta for the help lads.
