Need help diagnosing my lude

Post by James 5th gen » Fri Dec 22, 2017 3:11 pm

Ok so my car randomly cut out the other day, it wouldn’t start up straight after but once it was left a few minutes it started fine.
Now i can’t drive it anywhere, when i start it up it’ll idle but the car doesn’t sound right and the exhaust is spitting. If I rev the car the revs drop right down and it almost cuts out.
I had a mate plug in a computer and it only pulled up the map sensor. So I’ve changed that for a new one but the problem is still there.
I can hear quite a loud hiss coming from around the throttle body area but I cant feel any leaks or see any split pipes. So I’m wondering if anyone has experienced this before or has a clue on what it is? Thanks

I might give that a go, I’ve been told to spray some around the area to find any leaks as well

Yep, give it a good spray all over the air intake system, a bit at a time while idling. If the revs pick up, you've found the vacuum leak.
If that's all good, bleed the cooling system, if that's good, check the plugs and leads abd if that's good, check the coil would be my suggestions.

I had a chuffing exhaust and poor running at idle recently and the gasket at the 4 to 2 join on the manifold had gone. Might be worth a check. This was just one of my problems, o2 sensor was also knackered and a valve clearance issue.

Okay so I thought I had fixed it but last night I went out and I broke down again. I had cleaned and tightened my fitv, as soon as everything was back on it started up fine and ran just as it should.
I had no issues for 2 days and I thought it was sorted. But now my car is abandoned at my sisters house and I’m left asking people for lifts. Anyone got any other ideas? Maybe my fitv become loose again and I just need a new one.
Any help would be appreciated :) I’ve spent a lot of money on the car I really don’t want to see it go.

is it bringing up an engine warning light? i would get your ecu read again for errors.

sounds to me like the distributor is going. have you got a spare to swap with? or any 5g owner nearby with one you can borrow? where do you live?

i'd also check if there is oil in your spark plugs, and the condition of the plugs too.

Which of the things from my list have you done and what were the results?

Just a quick update, I’ll will be going through everything you’ve suggested tomorrow but first I’ll be ringing Honda as I’ve seen a lot of talk about ignition switch recall. From what I’ve read it could be that. I think this and my fitv going at the same time is a coisdence but I’ve driven the car back to my house now with no issues at all. I’ll update again tomorrow :)

There was a recall for the ignition switch, yes and that could result in not starting. It wouldn't cause the mis-fire problem though.
