BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New headlights

Post by vanzep » Wed Sep 25, 2024 8:21 pm

possibly - I have come across difference in fan mounting points before - possibly some models had different rad to the normal denso ones or could be a jdm vs ukdm thing or a BB4 thing :) sure the rad on facelift BB4 is different size and core thickness....
anyway ive had to swap fans before.

OEM fans fitted onto the koyo rad I had on my old BB4.

I have been fretting a bit as the top of the rad is very hot when lifting the bonnet after a run- Merlin says nothing to worry about :)

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New headlights

Ill point my laser thermometer at my Mishimoto and see what temp it says. It does have water at 90+ degree inside, so it will get very hot, and IMO the alloy the rad is made out of will be a better heat conductor than the OEM rad.

Mine is the same, I just put it down to the better conductivity of the Ally v's the OEM plastic.

Plastic is an insulator, where aluminium is a conductor - so for sure, the top tank of the mishimoto rad will be hotter (externally) than the oem.

Thank all for the replies/info i do love this forum
Good point on conductivity - and glad to hear others have noticed the same.
Laser thermometer - ftw ;)

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New headlights

The Kakimoto cat-back exhaust has got a bit louder and rattily of late. Traced the rattle to the centre section silencer. Felt like the inner baffle pipe had detached. Was a bit worried about there being a blockage so decided to see if I had something to replace it with.
I still have the cat back (scorpion Back box) that used to belong to indigolemon so decide to use that all I needed to do was cutdown an old decat pipe to 4" and this mated up with the Fujitsubo 3rd pipe and slip joint to the centre section. All went on quite easily though I did need help from Merlin and son. Think it took about 3 hours to do the swap over. I checked the Kakimoto once off the car and yes the baffle was completely detached and one bolt from mid section to back box had sheared so the cat back definitely needed replaced.
The new/old exhaust is quieter and flow should be better with 60mm piping all the way through and no nasty oem cat. :)
No pics but Merlin may have taken a couple of snaps.

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New exhaust

here is the Kakimoto exhaust that came off the car
just wondering what to do with it - the rear silencer has no baffle so it sounds like "race car" without all the hassle of actually building one
the baffle in the small centre section has detatched and is rattling around
I could remove the centre baffle somehow and run without any baffles but maybe ive had my time with loud exhausts and maybe oem is where i should be going.
The scorpion system ive put on has two silencers and sounds good - deep but not too loud but the 2nd silencer sits a bit low for my liking so going to see if i can improve that a bit more.

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New exhaust

Also got this H22a - got to decide what to do with it.
Think it may have the higher comp pistons worth keeping - will need to see what the valve train and cams are - came out of a Honda Tourneo so not sure - HG went but was low miles.
Ive also got a couple of other cylinder heads and H22a bottom end from low mileage auto.

BB1 Scrapyard Dog - New exhaust

turns out the white cam cover H22 is 220ps one so will have to take it apart and have a look - as far as i know it had failed head gasket but was low mileage. Ive never done a engine build of my own so maybe this time......

Still on exhausts ive had a change of exhaust again  - this time oem including cat mated to fukitsubo supper ex manifold.
Oem twin tips for the first time in decades :)
Changing the bootlid back to the original to the BB1 spoilerless one. Just got to fit the new number plate.
