the insurance is so cheap because the insurance company know it will spend most of the time broken on the drive

My old Renaultsport Clio 182 (0-60 in 6.3 to 7.1 depending who you believe) was noticeably quicker accelerating than my mates 20k mile RX-8 231 - even he said so. Mazda definitely overclaimed for it.
I love the rotary concept - there's a real engineering elegance to it. But they are very cheap used for a reason. I asked warranty direct to quote breakdown insurance once and they were talking over £1500 for a year for a low-ish mileage one. The guy actually apologised and explained (as I already knew) about the engine issues. My mate got shot of his low miler just before it went bang. Good luck to your mate, but I'd advise him never to shut the engine off after starting it without getting it up to temperature. And to pray a lot.

i dissagry about rotary, i had few rx7 in my workshop and if you do good service and dont look to pay few £££ more this engine never go wrong.
problem is with owners, who rather go to small garage who use cheap parts and cheap service kits to save few £££.
and no need forgot rx7 never been developed as car for daily drive

yes josef being cheap on servicing will kill any engine but the rotary engine is well known for its weak rotor tips especially the rx7 it was supposed to have been resolved in the rx8 engine with different rotor tips but they still fail.
