Everyone else has obviously given further advice but just to confirm a few of the questions you asked;

Means cambelt isn't snapped, yes. Doesn't tell you if it has jumped though.
I shorted out the test plug, turned on the ignition and the orange 'check engine' (I assume that's the cel light) light came on but did not flash. Hopefully that rules out a lot of things...?
Normal and no fault codes stored.
The only other light on the dash apart from the seatbelt, handbrake etc. lights is the CAT light. can't remember if that is normal and that it goes.out when the engine is running?
Having just checked on the JDM, that has a red cat over temp light that's on with ignition/service connector and goes out when the engine runs, so I'd say that's normal.
