Everyone else has obviously given further advice but just to confirm a few of the questions you asked;
Dobbs wrote: The rotor arm turns when the engine is crancked - hopefully that means that the cambelt is ok, but it'll be great to have someone here confirm that...?
Means cambelt isn't snapped, yes. Doesn't tell you if it has jumped though.
I shorted out the test plug, turned on the ignition and the orange 'check engine' (I assume that's the cel light) light came on but did not flash. Hopefully that rules out a lot of things...?
Normal and no fault codes stored.
The only other light on the dash apart from the seatbelt, handbrake etc. lights is the CAT light. can't remember if that is normal and that it goes.out when the engine is running?
Having just checked on the JDM, that has a red cat over temp light that's on with ignition/service connector and goes out when the engine runs, so I'd say that's normal.

Have you poked the crank pulley to see if that is loose? A loose pulley will cause the battery and CAT warning lights to come on.

Many thanks to all inc. wurlycorner for confirming things. I've got a 2nd hand dizzy with coil pack and leads coming soon thanks to GJMHONDA2012, so we'll see what difference that makes.

With ref. to a loose crank pully - err, how do you 'give it a poke'? :o I guess the rocker cover would need to be removed??

Thanks again folks,

Dobbs.

You'd know if the crank pulley was loose if the auxiliary belts were loose. The crank pulley is on the right hand side of the block, right at the bottom ;)

Ah, now I see

All aux belts are nicely tight - one of the first things I checked as I'd replaced them only a month or so ago.

The dash battery light is fully illuminated and all the electrics work. The battery was new in March and has not given any problems and has always charged ok.

Hopefully that eliminates the battery & alternator?

Hello Dobbs, from what other people are saying it could sound like it's the coil as the symptoms seem to be similar to what you have.

Let us know if fitting that new coil fixes the issue if not I'm based in Oxford and am happy to come and help you in the faultfinding!

Good luck mate

Hi folks,

Quick question ref. distributor replacement - if I take note of the position of the rotor arm in the old dizzy and install the new one with the rotor arm in the same position, it should work (in my mind), or is there a better way of doing a replacement?

I've had a quick look in the Electrical section of the manual and although it covers removal of a dizzy, reinstallation is not detailed. Ok, it's early in the am so I could well have missed it... :?

Any advice would be great - hopefully the replacement unit will be arriving today so I'm hoping that it will solve all the problems, including world poverty etc. :P

Cheers,

Dobbs.
