Are all Vtecs different?
When I went out in a B16 coupe & felt VTEC for the first time I was hooked, being only 18 I couldnt afford insurance on a VTEC car so it wasn't until I was 20 that I could afford a Civic MB6 but I went from there and have had 6 honda's since. None of the VTEC cross overs on the preludes, civics and s2000's were quite as aggressive and not as enjoyable as that little B16 equiped car. To get a more aggressive VTEC cross over point you could raise your VTEC engagement point or file down your mild lobes, of course I am joking so don't do this!

I cant feel VANOS, which is the BMW VTEC, come in on the 328. I can hear it now i have the SS exhaust
but I cant feel it.
and all three of my type S had the same smooth power curve. it was only the vti that had the 'kick'. nice but I like the reality of speed rather than the impression of it

B18 is/was raved over and suffers the same issue.wurlycorner wrote:So if smooth is better, why is the ATR raved about and said to have a far more harsh cross over?
It will come down to market. Chavs and grown up chavs want a vtec kick. ITS FUN. hence the civic and ATR having quite pronounced xovers. The more decerning customer, or lude buyer, will want a slightly smoother xover, hence vtec in a lude is a little less obvious. Then you have the specials where they tune out the 'kick' because they know these customers want the best possible power curve available, happily at the expense of the kick.
Yes I am saying the ATR is easily marketable to chavs who need more doors.
I bet you dont get a hard kick in a nicely running NSX
