Just had first big tank slapper in the porka. Good job nothing was coming the other way cause there was nothing I could do to keep it on my side of the road. Nasty back/forward 4 times...

My fault really, I've been enjoying deliberately getting the back end out when it's wet recently and it's nice and progressive to control, this car. I was doing less than 30 but forgot this particular roundabout is drokking lethal  It was resurfaced a couple of years ago and I think they used oil rather than tarmac - it's very dodgy in a fwd car in the wet and apparently lethal in a rwd one!

(the spacemaker storage/Toyota/b&q roundabout for those in Chelmsford...)

I've been meaning to ask people's opinions/knowledge on something rwd related...

One big difference I notice with the porka, is the brake balance. You can feel the rear of the car doing much more work during braking than with any of my other cars (e.g. lude). There's no noticeable weight transfer/dive to the front when you hit the brakes. nb: This isn't a problem, it's just an observation on the characteristics of the car.

I've been thinking this is probably because either;
  • The engine braking effect is on the rear instead of the front
The weight distribution on the car is balanced fr/rr instead of being fr biased
The brake bias is more balanced fr/rr instead of being fr biased (but not sure whether this is as a direct link to the weight distribution, or just as a seperate, unlinked design decision)
Interested what people think is the reason for it?

well the engine on a porka is hung well out the back although it is slightly balanced by the gearbox the weight bias will always be to the back brakes because of the weight.
the transfer on porcshe's has always been an issue except for the 924/928's for obvious reasons and there isn't a whole lot you can do about it without going extreme on spring rates and even then you will still feel it, especially when your low on juice.

Ta - this is a 924S, not a 911 though :D
(sorry, probably should have said - for some reason I can't explain, it seems I was just assuming that people would know that! )

has someone adjusted the bias then ? I used to have a 944s and it seemed to brake fine biased to the front there was weight transfer on launch and under heavy braking but not a lot. the engine in the 924 isn't as far back as the 944 but isn't hanging out front either and it should be fairly balanced with the gearbox transaxle

Everything's standard as far as I know.

 Sorry, I'm probably not making myself clear here...
I don't think there's anything wrong or abnormal with the car - I think this is how it is normally.
I'm just commenting that the brake balance is something that's noticeably different about how the porka feels compared to any fwd car I've had and I'm just wondering what is it that affects that characteristic (braking balance) the most between the porka and fwd cars.

Also, is this just a porka 924s thing, or do all rwd cars feel more like this? I drove an E34 5 series once and can't say I noticed the brake balance being less front heavy, but then again I suppose that car still is very front heavy and I was way more distracted by how truly terrible the steering was, to pay any attention to anything else!!!

:? What do you mean about the engine being further back on the 944 btw? I didn't think there was any difference between the engine position on the S and a 944?

I was properly intrigued by that, so I asked the internet...
