I suggest it depends where you tend to do most of your driving/acceleration - and most people won't be doing hard acceleration in 5th???

It's probably horses for courses though...

I also wouldn't want to be sat in a car doing 150mph against some ratchet straps - 100mph is quite scary enough thanks!

Yep, that was after reading PAW's post ;)
EDIT: to elaborate my previous response, what I meant was that saying 5th was used was because that was closer to what people see in the real world in terms of engine load, is dependant on where that person does most of their acceleration on that car? The rolling resistance in the dyno should present the load that the car would see under normal driving conditions, so if that person doesn't do most of their hard acceleration in 5th, then tuning in 5th might not most closely reflect what that persons car sees in the real world, i.e. while that might be against maximum load, if the car isn't generally run against that maximum load, then that isn't the best 'nominal' load against which to tune it?

That's my thought process 'out loud' based on understanding engineering fundamentals though, not being presented as 'fact' or on experience in actually carrying out engine tuning...

But you could say who does most of their hard accelerating in 4th??
It's used because it usually gives happy customer figures, unless you're part of the '177 club'... :? ;)

Yep, but 4th is nearer to 1/2/3 than 5th?

(BTW, edited to expand my explanation in previous post)

Furry muff.

The way my feeble brain understands it, is that 5th gives 'longer' to map the car's curve, what I mean is i imagine 1st 2nd and 3rd would all be too short for decent mapping purposes? 4th is convenient as it's near 1:1 and is 'long enough', 5th is similar except that it's 'under more load'. Does that come across at all how I meant it??!

Basically, I pay the man, and he does stuff........

:o

to the car, the car!
