Sailor goes sailing

Post by Sailor » Thu Jul 21, 2016 7:48 pm

We left the Beaulieu on 2nd July, setting off just before the start of the Round The Island Race. The big tris and cats were overtaking us by the time we got to The Needles. It was bumpy - we even got to watch one of the cats fall over ...

We decided to stop in Weymouth for the night.

The winds died and we had a lot of motoring. We refuelled at Bangor on the Belfast Lough, but not before a nice Irish Sea sunset ...

... and afterwards, sunrise over Kintyre.

The marina on Kerrera has let itself go and the little ferry over to Oban stops far too early in the evening to get a decent meal ashore. We didn't stay long. Lochboisdale on South Uist was a better bet.

This isn't the boat ...

... but this is (the blue yacht)

Our line fishing hadn't been a success. Perhaps we should have borrowed some of these:-

What? A plastic fantastic? No.
It's a J160, built in Rhode Island about 15 years ago. It belongs to a friend and we've sailed oodles of miles in it since new, including some racing. If a Beneteau is a Peugeot of some kind, this one's an RS6.

On with the holiday snaps.

We went on to St Kilda, way west of the Hebrides. The wind and swell made it imprudent to land, so we anchored off for a bit until the weather said it was time to go.

We sailed through the Sound of Harris and ended up at Lochmaddy, North Uist.

Next stop, Rum.

I know. The last 15 years' sailing have been on a boat that cost more than my house: it's good to have mates!

From Rum, we went to Dunstaffnage marina, just north of Oban ...

... and just south of the Connel Bridge, a 1903 masterpiece of rivets.

We'd had to motor a bit more than we'd have liked and the weather wasn't always the brightest, but it was a great couple of weeks. Ricky picked me up in Stranraer for a few days' in NE England. The other 4 crew brought the boat back to the Beaulieu.
