Well, this morning I went for a test drive in an NSX I'd seen advertised on a Malaysia 'Auto Trader' type site. The thing that struck me as odd was that there were two ads, both for a red NSX, with slight variations in the wording. Now granted, I don't know one end of screwdriver from the other, but I think I'm reasonably intelligent enough to smell a rat. So anyway, I called both the (different) numbers last Friday, to arrange the appointment to look at it this morning. Both of them replied, and both agreed to meet me on Sunday. Then I asked one of them, "are these ads both for the same car?". One of them replied they were. Weird. As you can see from the ads, one is a
1991 Acura 'recon' (grey import) manual

and t'other is a
1990 Honda 'used' manual.

Anyway, I popped down this morning and although drooling at the thought, I was expecting something a bit 'Boycie' as things just didn't add up.
Of course, from a distance, she looked stunning but I'm afraid close up, there were signs that something wasn't right. The wheels were pretty badly scuffed and scraped and on opening the driver's door, the pull handle was dangling by a cable. The engine didn't sound at all raspy and the smell of petrol from the rear was astonishing. However, it got worse. We got in and set off for a drive and immediately I noticed the steering was utterly useless. It was very strange, and actually quite scary on the road. I'd fight to turn the wheel and nothing seemed to happen. I had to tank the damn wheel to turn all the while fighting a rotten vibration through the steering wheel itself. Stopping was just as scary. The brakes were bloody dangerous. Oh yes, the air-con wheezed into life but could barely cool the car.
After getting back, in one piece, Del-Boy gave me the patter and I asked about a log book/service book/paperwork regarding servicing etc. It had none. Oh dear. When I asked him about the apparent contradiction in the ads he said it was the fault of the website. Oh dear again. Bottom line, I walked away and even though my crazy, impulsive side said "Yes, yes, yes", I knew something wasn't right. Damn. Well, at least i got to see one again and reinforced my desire to one day possess one of those stunning machines but today wasn't to be that day. One day...
