Outer CV joints for 4th Gen (ABS)

Post by vanzep » Sun Feb 07, 2016 4:02 pm

The new BB1 lude need both outer cv joints replaced at some point so i thought id ask on here before i go and look at aftermarket stuff.

Im after two outer cv joints with abs ring for 4th gen BB1.

New or 2nd hand will do - would prefer oem if possible.

and how the hell do you get the outer cv joint off the driveshaft :? is it a job for a big hammer

I think it is pretty much a driveshaft out job. There a set/stop ring on the shaft that goes into the CV joint. You apparently need a slide hammer to get the CV joint off, that isn't going to go well with the other end in the gearbox.

Yeah you can do it on the car, but the obvious risk is popping them out the gearbox. I've managed it. Just get a second pair of strong hands and arms ;)

And most outer CV joints will accept the ABS ring, so you can just swap them over.

Can't you just undo the inner boot so the inner tri-ax joint comes apart, leaving the inner end still in the box, meaning you can take the rest of the shaft off to work on the bench, without any risky shenanigans? Re-assembly then being reverse of removal...
(I don't know for sure - not done it myself on a lude)

Really it is only the drivers side that is the issue. It is much easier to remove the whole shaft as (I have found) that trying to get the spider bearings back into the cup (especially on the drivers side) when the cup is still in the gearbox is difficult. You need to get the spider bearings the correct way plus it needs to be 100% straight before they go back in.

Removing the shaft completely is the easier thing to do. Also not an issue if you haven't changed your gearbox fluid recently (or ever). TBH if the car is jacked up on the drivers side only there is a good chance that no fluid will escape.

excellent advice chaps :) im going to build some up off the car
picking up 3pcs - 2nd hand H22 driveshafts at the end of the week - fingers crossed theyre good uns
might go ahead and change both shafts and the intermediate and go for a gear box fluid change as ive got some Torco stuff sitting here (the gearbox sometimes feels a bit notchy going into first so doing a fluid change wont hurt)
