Mapping, Cooling & Brakes..

Post by Dino » Mon Jan 16, 2017 1:44 pm

Its been a little while since Ive updated this thread.
In the constant strive to further improve what is already a great base platform of a 4th gen prelude, I have had many plans in the waiting and a few niggles to sort along the way.
Currently the prelude with its build was not mapped specifically. The car was running a P13 with SpoonV1/Darf Sport Chip. However, the car drove well and made good power on a dyno 24 months ago (250bhp). However, I was looking to bring this all together and get what was achievable from the engine.
So originally, I went and bought a 70mm tapered to 68mm throttle body mated to a port matched (68mm) ATR Intake manifold fitted with EVO 550cc injectors as the car was being restricted my its OEM Intake set-up.
Image
To go with this, I also bought a Skunk-2 Thermal Intake manifold Gasket
Image
A little while back, I managed to salvage a P28 ECU fitted with the Hondata S300 software from STK’s prelude, ready to fit to the car for mapping.
Image
The aim for the car is also to see a few track days. Currently fitted with a baffled sump and additional oil feed to the head, the last part of the Engine safeguarding was to fit a MOCAL 16 Row Oil Cooler with a Thermostatic Sandwich Plate.
Image
The car had developed a slight hesitation on wide-open-throttle (WOT) in 4th gear.
So I went through a few things on the car and bought a brand new distributor
Image
Fitted a new set of NGK Iridium IX spark plugs
Image
And fitted a Warlboro 255lph Fuel pump
Image
The hesitation was still there, but I hadn’t fitted the new Dizzy as was going to let Performance Autoworks fit and set-up the timing when it was booked in for the tuning and fitting.
In the mean time, I was looking to improve the braking on the car to be a little more suitable for track and to get a new set of wheels to fit my R888 tyres.
So I have ordered a set of 4 Black Team Dynamics Pro-Race 1.2’s 15x7 ET30,that should see them sitting just under the arches of the car. I am currently waiting for these to be made and delivered but should be with me just after the 1st Feb. I chose these wheels as they are very light and also are one of the few 15” wheels that are able to accommodate the ATR brake set-up with 300mm discs.

I then went and purchased a brake set-up that I have used before on track to great effect and are also perfectly usable on the road.
Bremtec Grooved Front Discs
Hawk HP+ front brake pads
Hawk HPS rear brake pads
MOTUL RBF 660 brake fluid.

So with the car booked into Performance Autoworks and the car loaded-up, off I trotted for my long anticipated journey to Prelude Heaven.

Upon arrival at Performance Autoworks, I had a chat with Rich and confirmed the works to be done.
- Valve Clearances
- Fit TB/IM/Injectors
- Fit Hondata S300
- Fit Mocal Oil Cooler.
Everything looked to plan, I brought a spare ATR Intake manifold incase any spare sensors etc were needed, Spare oil, Spare fuel filter and filled the car with V-power ready for mapping…. All good we thought…….
Rich looked at the ECU… It apparently was hardwired with an OBD2a socket to the circuit board… This caused a problem as the P28 should have been an OBD1 port, but this had come from a 5th gen.
So after a mad hour of phoning around with Rich, Tegiwa managed to save the day with getting me an OBD2a (ECU) to OBD1 (Car) conversion harness on priority mail… Booom… Job done & good to go 
Rich had mentioned that the dyno they use has recently been running conservatively, so I wasn’t expecting big figures 230-240bhp, but was mostly looking forward to the way it should drive after mapping…
So off I went back home waiting for Rich to work the magic that only the GODS and himself know.
Through out the week, I received regular updates of how the work was progressing.

This included fitment of the oil cooler & IM.

He also had to open the injector ports of the IM as the EVO injectors were too short to give an even spray pattern.

Also, while the base tuning was being done, Rich sent me an awesome picture of the manifold pipes glowing a lovely deep Cherry Red.
Image
The following week, I go and collect the car with Bacon Buttie in-hand for Rich (Standard PA Currency or cakes)
Rich talked me through all the works he undertook on the car very thoroughly.
I paid the bill and started my drive back home……
The car is so much better to drive, it pulls really well in all gears with really smooth power delivery.
Everytime, I came off a round-about, I was grinning from ear-to-ear (More than usual).
Its such a transformation and I am sooooo happy with the car.
I just cant wait for my day to finish today so I can drive the car home!!!
Next, Ive booked my first track day at Castle Combe for 25th Feb… so I cant wait to go out on that.
I am just Spec’ing up what new coilovers to go for … so more updates coming soon.

I just want to say a Massive Thank you to Rich@PerformanceAutoworks for all your thorough work, good banter, attention to detail and great Customer service.
Ive been a customer of yours for a long time and will continue to do so for a long time.
Thank you from a very happy customer 8-)
