Well after my last update, the next thing was to get the car prepared for the upcoming track day at Castle Combe on the 25th Feb.
There were a few bit that needed sorting.
Firstly I had a set of Sabelt 4 point harnesses, but these were meant to fit a harness bar. I purchased a set of 3” harness loops and some new harness mounting eye bolts to mount the harnesses. (Demon Tweeks)
Ive been trying to keep with the black and red theme and I think it seems to work pretty well
Harnesses now fitted:
The car was currently running a standard 282mm brake-set-up, but felt that the brakes could have done with a little more braking capability, especially for track work, but also keeping the oem feel for general road driving. I may possibly upgrade my brakes again in the future, but for the moment these should be more than up to the job.
The car already has Goodridge braided brake lines so went ahead and ordered the following.
- 282mm Bremtec Grooved Discs (from BrakesInternational)
- Hawk HP+ brake pads for the front (Cambridge Motorsports)
- Hawk HPS brake pads for the rear (Cambridge Motorsports)
- Motul RBF660 Brake Fluid (OpieOils)
So after a couple of hours I got these all fitted and with the help of my girlfriends daughters, also flushed through the new brake fluid.
The car is fitted with a set of KYB dampers and PI springs, however these are not height adjustable and the car sits a little higher at the front than the rear of the car. This obviously isn’t very good for the handling of the car as it will make the car understeer. I am currently sourcing a set of coilovers as I type this, but wanted to see how the car would perform on track as is. To help bring the front down a little, I fitted a set of DC2 Integra front forks which are approx. 15mm shorter than the prelude forks. They are a little chunkier than the prelude items, but I wasn’t really concerned by a little extra weight in this case.
Once fitted they had levelled the car out a bit, which I was happy with.
The next item on my list was an oil change. The car currently runs on Mobil 1 0W-40 Fully synthetic. As an oil for road use, this is pretty good for me, it offers good cold temperature protection and is suitable for daily use on the engine. However, as the car is going to be used for some track days and 4000 miles since I last changed the oil, I opted for millers CFS 10w-50 Fully synthetic. It was a choice of this or the 10w-60. I opted for the 10w-50 as the car is not a race-only application. Job Done
I had a set of 15” Rota Slipstreams fitted with Toyo R888 tyres. However these were 5 stud and I needed a set of 4 stud rims. I do love the Slipstreams as they are very light and even considered a 5 stud conversion. Having done a little research, I decided to buy a set of Team dynamics Pro-Race 1.2’s 15x7 ET30. I went for these as they are slightly lighter than the slipstreams, and with an ET30 offset, will fill my arches to the max and are one of a few 15” wheels that will fit a full ATR brake set-up including 300mm discs. Again, an option I wanted to leave open for a potential future braking upgrade. The wheel had to be made at the factory and arrived in February after being ordered in November
With the R888’s fitted.
After a little further prep, the car was now ready for its first track day at castle Combe
The car was loaded up and I was ready to go.
Weather for the day was forecast to be dry in the morning and rain in the afternoon.
I had to meet Rich of Performance Autoworks in the morning so he could set-up the ignition timing on my car as earlier in the week, the screw fitting the rotor arm in my new dizzy had come loose and shredded the existing rotor arm. The ignition timing cant be set-up with a standard timing light as it is now set through the ECU. So Rich double checked everything at Combe and gave me the thumbs up to hit the track.
Its been 3 years since I’ve done any track days, so was very rusty, plus I hadn’t driven the car in anger yet, so this was just as much about learning the car and familiarising myself with the lines on the track. Throughout the morning I gradually got faster and my confidence started to grow……. And then it rained….
The track was not wet on the next session, but greasy and the R888’s were struggling, this had me pinching my chocolate starfish a few times…LOL…. So, I finished the session early.
Time to fit my Rainsport 3’s as the weather got wetter…
This was the best couple of the sessions I had all day…. I never realised how much grip these tyres give in the wet, and the confidence they installed was amazing… My cornering speed was very good and the braking points still pretty late….. Ive never pushed them on the road before, but now I know how good they are.
Overall it was great day and I learnt a load about the car. She was faultless all day.
I have now decided to make a few changes to the car relating to the suspension so more updates to follow.
