Re: BsBB1 - Piston Broke....
...the same as me.
Well update time.
Gave the car some beans on the way home a few weeks back, nothing silly, but a decent rev.
All was well, but as I pulled into my road, I felt just a small stutter as I got back on the throttle.
Thought it was a tad odd, a few days later, go out to start the car -
Takes a while...hmmm odd.
Then starts, but feels way down on power.
Only got to the front of the house, when it died again and wouldn't start, and made a horrid noise on the last crank
Long story short, it was suspected that the ICM in the dizzy was probably failing, then failed. Now as my dizzy is 20 years old, it was a false economy to buy just an ICM, when I could get the whole lot with new coil, ICM, dizzy cap, rotor arm etc for £150. So ordered one up.
Fitted it, started, but sounded as rough as a badgers arse and had lots of smoke out the back when revved slightly.
On closer inspection, the wiring in the dizzy had had it - the sleeves had become brittle and cracked, probably causing arcing across:

Without wishing to make it any worse...arranged to flat bed it to Rich.
By the time I'd had my first coffee the next day, he showed me this:

Yep, thats a fooked piston and a scored block
So that's what that horrid noise was....
After chatting at length with The Oracle, best guess is that the dizzy was starting to fail, the decent drive may well have helped finish it off. The point being, when trying to restart it after the stalls, #2 bore at least probably had way too much fuel in, coupled with a probable misfire - the spark igniting it while the piston was on the way up.
Lots of energy + nowhere to go = bang.
It's basically jobby luck and a rare set of circumstances, but I'm good at that stuff
Anyway, so what to do?
Give up on her? Break the rest?
Screw that...we can rebuild her
The one positive (aside from having a rather fetching piston paperweight) is that I got to meet @4thgenphil , and what thoroughly nice gent he is too. Massive thanks to him for going out of his way and meeting me at short notice, to give me this, for an extremely fair price.
:

Another A8 block, ready to build up.
I did (for a split second) contemplate forged builds and all that guff, but frankly that's a lot of cash for a totally overkill engine for what I need.
So, as it stands Rich is building it up again, hopefully I can update this with better news in the not too distant future.

Re: BsBB1
Don't worry @nafemannathan, I can be a right miserable flange as well
It's funny, I wasn't really that pissed off.
I think I've just had so much worse happen and after all, these are just cars eh. They don't reaaallly matter.
@wurlycorner yeah, the piston is twisted too, I'll upload the pic in due course. BTW, Thanks for offering your help, even though it wasn't required in the end, I do appreciate it
