I've got a replacement bare door to fit and swap everything over to soon, so I'll have a closer look once I've removed the lock

totally off topic but....... just to be different put the front end of your 3rd onto your accord and your accord front end on your 3rd/2.5 gen, i imagine it would look caf.

I guess what you've described is the benefit of later cars having an O2/lambda sensor (I'm assuming 3rd gens don't have?)
When the thermosensor fails on a 4th gen, the ECU reverts to a default setting which means it runs quite rich (and so as it warms up, it starts to race on idle). Once the O2 sensor has warmed up though, that starts reading and it takes over for the mixture setting, bringing the mixture back under control.
