Thats the PCV system.

That will be the cause of your VW standard emissions.

OK so I stripped the front calipers down as the pistons were sticking. Pain in the butt but sorted.
I also fitted a strap for the battery and fixed the rear reg light. I couldnt find any local factors with the 10mm internal dim hose so eBay should be sending me a length tomorrow. It should pass then?

Here is a pic as I rolled her out before works began.

Do the diameters change from one end to the other on each pipe?

I'd have to consult Lings, but can't at the moment.

@wurlycorner do you know anyone breaking a carved 3rd gen?
Sorry, nope. Don't know of one.
Sounds like getting sorted now though, which is good 8-)

OK so I fixed everything on the list of failures including the 2 split pipes ...MOT wise she is good to go BUT the emissions didnt come down enough
The MOT tester says I need to adjust the mixture screw as it is still over fueling slightly.

And ideas guys?

I took it back today to check the emissions and the MOT tester hinted towards a possible culprit.
I removed a pipe and blocked both ends. The car run much smoother and it would pass emissions!

Remember I also turned in the fuel mixture which brought down the CO but raised the HC. Then blocking the below brought it all down. She runs much nicer and cleaner and faster now!

Just got to book her in for a proper retest but they are not happy that the throttle sticks when I drive it - at about 1800 revs - I have to push it down with my finger from on top of the engine to where I cannot get the car to tick over less than 1200 revs? If I force the throttle 'thing' down I can get the car to rev at around 800 but as I let go it returns to 1200 revs. I have turned the idle screw and fast idle screws out. I have backed out the choke so that it doesnt even come on.

Its as if something else is keeping the throttle open? Another screw somewhere? Add some lube somewhere?

Have a couple of pics as she sits outside the MOT centre
