Clancy the Surf.
Hey guys, so I have been sitting on a new vehicle for the last two months. Bought it and started servicing it and basically got a bit involved
This is Clancy
She is named after Abbey the WAG as she is Essential Waitrose white and has NEVER been near anything grubby. Also because we picked her up in a very rich area of Surry and she didn't come from there originally.
72k
1998
Hilux surf IMPOOOOORT
3.0 Turdbo derve
One of the very rare intercooler models that made it over here. Imported in....2009... so NO RUST. No bloody dirt at all to be honest. As I understand it it was imported by the company I bought it off for a friend of the owners who was the local publican. She put 10k on it in her 6 years of ownership and finally got the import company to put it on the market for her as it was in the garage getting no use at all. Minty fresh doesnt even cover it.
You can tell she has been stored in a garage for the whole of her life as, now its outside in the elements, all the oils are leaching out of the rubbers Makes for little black run lines after its rained a few times but confirms the absolutly clean condition of the car.
Bought to downsize the fleet and be a crew vehicle at events. Also I wanted another import to drive.
This is the list of works that got done finally. Finished yesterday. There were a number of other service bits, gaskets and cleanings that went on. this is the main list.
water pump
check valve clearences
Check glowplug operation/condition
Flush radiator
Brake inspection and service/clean.
Refill viscous fan with oil
Remove EGR system.
Delete in radiator oil cooler and replace with external cooler.
Thermostat
oil change/filter
brake fluid bleed
service injectors
All belts
Clean intercooler
dif oils
trans oil flush
Grease all zerks
air filter
fuel filter
Install water temp gauge into top hose boss.
Install Pyrometer/EGT sensor into manifold.
Install boost guage into intercooler pressure pipework.
Install transmission temp gauge into sump.
Install manual boost controller
Powdercoat wheels
New tires.
The thing that took the time was the powdercoat. The wheels didnt pass QC so had to go back through it took ages
Well worth it though.....
after much research I decided on Michelin Latitude cross. 65/35 road/off and looking pretty funky
She came with this funky controller.....
How utterly retro is that?
Its a remote vehicle starter With an aerial Quality 90's gear.
I have put a couple of personal touches on her
And this is the flight deck
We have :
Water temp as it comes out the block (in tandem with the OE gauge which is post radiator to give a view of the radiator performance) Alarmed
ATF temp at the sump Alarmed
Boost Alarmed
Exhaust gas temps Alarmed
Volts
Air temp at the filter
Air temp post turbo and intercooler
mucho learning went into sorting all that out. 7 meters in the space of 1.5 din. chuffed.
This will give us plenty of warning of things going south (which they can, fast, when towing) and allow me to keep a record of nicolas driving as they have peak hold and memory functions I explained its basically like having me sat next to her all the time watching her drive and keeping notes she was less than impressd.
And finally....... Does she pass the test?
yes, walking back to her in the car park? I smiled.
Pics of the oil cooler instal coming up.
Thanks for looking. Any comments welcome

Re: Clancy the Surf.
I think the phrase
You can go fast.... I can go anywhere!
best fits...
To be fair it picks up pretty fast for such a big vehicle but its a step to the side from the 328
Still, I'm already working out a few greenlanes and they are much cheaper and easier to get to and onto than race tracks.

Re: Clancy the Surf.
@nathan: yeah I started it about 7 weeks ago. It seems to be 'on trend' The decal made me roar when I saw it. And yes, quite a big girl she defo has back....
@wurly: Come on then, whats the beef with surfs? or is it like me and misobitchy? Fletch is almost going to his new home. Pics will get done but so many things have got in the way of uploading them on this connection and posting. Rubbish I know but I'll get there..
@simon: It is certainly a different view Fist time I drove it I scared the living jessies out of an audi A6 driver....I had no idea where the edges and corners were and was well over is side of the narrow country road bearing down on him.
