SLS team TrackScotland AK

Post by Merlin » Thu Apr 07, 2016 9:22 am

This year TrackScotland are putting entering 3 teams, up from 2 the last 2 years. Even though we finished 4th in the team event last year we were close to retaining our title (we were 2014 winners). This year we have a new team member.

What were your reasons for going down a class again?

Different engine with less power I think? IIRC the race engine is being rebuilt to run on jet fuel.

Power / Weight Testing 2016

Post by Merlin » Mon Apr 11, 2016 9:43 am

Yeah I didnt want to stay in E this year. So while the engine is out I am going to make the decision on either getting more power out of the race engine or stay in F with this engine.

Power / Weight Testing

Image

The car weighed 1220kg on their scales with me and two bars of fuel on board. Knowing my weight it was time to go on the dyno, It couldn't make more than 164whp or I would have to put ballast in. As the car was being put on the dyno I jokingly asked the dyno operator for 163whp. On the first run, to my surprise/relief it got 163whp  The 2nd run it made 165whp so it made an average of 164whp 8-)

1220kg & 164whp = 134.4whp/T with the class limit of 135whp/T 8-)

The dyno guy said that I should be happy with the engine as in his words it makes "very linear power". It is over fueling a bit, but I expected that. Injector duty cycle on this engine is ~85% Vs ~75% in the race engine, so I'm going to use a fair bit of fuel. He also said that it equates to around 215 bhp at the fly which is what I was aiming for and why I used a UK H22a2 (185bhp) ECU to try and temper my engine a little, who knows how much it would have made with the standard ECU or P28/S300

09/04/16 - TrackScotland

Post by Merlin » Mon Apr 11, 2016 9:44 am

09/04/16 - TrackScotland

Format - 2 hour open pit
Cost - £85
Conditions - Dry but a little nippy

The car felt good apart from juddery brakes. The brakes were getting better as more heat got into them and burn off any deposits but they are fairly heat cracked and I'm going to get new discs and pads before next weekend.

With the passenger seat and a passenger onboard, last seasons tyres, juddery brakes and not taking my braking to the extreme I managed a 63.1 which I think was pretty good. With all the above changed I think I will be putting in very competitive times this year.

Sorry about the crappy camera angle, my camera got dunted out of position and I didnt notice. The vid is of my single fasted lap of the day.

Fellow SLS 2015 competitor Yemen Lai was at that track day and rolled his car 10 mins into the session and had to be taken to hospital  He had neck injuries but is fine now but sore. Saturday was the first time I had ever used a HANS device, it wasn't as bad as I though it was going to be.

Can't get much closer than that on the power/weight - expert building 8-)
I just wonder how many races in you get, before someone cries foul again, just because you're doing a better job than them and gets you sent back to the dyno...

What's the engine bhp then?

Sorry to hear about the guy rolling his car. Pics of you in the Hans device and helmet? Curious how it looks, outside of top line motorsport ( :? no offense meant! )

BTW, that seat looks ridiculous on that corner, in comparison to your sex machine
